Martha Guy - Summer Business Opportunity at App State

The “best” summer opportunity awaits current high school juniors on the campus of Appalachian State University.

The Martha Guy Summer Institute for Future Business Leaders (MGSI) has a solid, 13-year history of inspiring students through exploration of the business world, and we are now accepting applications for our 2017 Cohort.

Unique aspects of MGSI
·         Unlike most summer opportunities, MGSI combines a residential experience with out of state travel.  Following two weeks on campus at Appalachian State University, the program concludes with a week of travel to various business and cultural/entertainment sites.
·         Each MGSI class is small. Twenty-four students are selected. The group size provides a much more intimate, personal experience for each participant.
·         It is quite affordable considering the extensive travel, excursions and activities; tuition is $1,800 plus a meal plan fee of $350
**Need-based scholarships are available to qualified applicants.

Which students are well suited for MGSI?
·         We are seeking students who have a sincere interest in business as a college major and demonstrate leadership potential.  Some candidates have an entrepreneurial spirit, or have unique or extensive part-time work experience.   Also consider your most competitive students among under-represented groups and populations.  Interested students should demonstrate academic achievement.
·         Students who embrace and appreciate new people, opportunities and experiences are ideal for MGSI.  They should also be well-prepared to be away from home and able to manage a demanding schedule.

FAFSA Info from CFNC.org

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The FAFSA will be available on October 1, 2016 for those students who are applying to a college for the fall of 2017. Whether or not you attended FAFSA Day, completing the FAFSA is the first step in making your college dreams a reality. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the standard form required for federal and state need-based aid and for consideration for many other scholarships and grant opportunities. The FAFSA can be completed and filed at www.fafsa.gov. If you haven't filed your FAFSA, you will need to create an FSA ID to file your FAFSA and look up your information later. You will need to get a FSA ID in order to electronically submit the FAFSA. Make sure you write down the email you used and the password as you will need these each year you are in school. One parent will also need a FSA ID. Apply here: https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm.
Once you've filed your FAFSA, the following topics may be helpful as you prepare to enter college in the fall. Please check out all of the great information on the site or give us a call at 866-866-CFNC (2362)!

College Fairs

Students in grades 9-12 will attend the Northside College Fair on Tuesday, September 27th. Approximately 40 representatives from colleges and universities will be on campus to provide information and answer questions.

This event is for students only.

Each grade level will have 30-45 minutes to speak with representatives. You will not have time to speak to each representative, so please review the list below and determine which colleges you are most interested in speaking with at the fair.

It is recommended that students bring information labels to the fair. Most colleges ask students to complete contact cards. To save time, make labels that can be attached to the contact cards. Labels should include the basics: name, address, e-mail, phone number, school name and code (Northside Christian Academy-340681), your year of graduation (e.g., 2017), and your intended major (if you know). This will save you from having to print the same information over and over and over again.

Parents are invited to attend the National Christian College Fair at Charlotte Christian with you child on September 26th (www.myblueprintstory.com).

Please prepare for both fairs by creating a list of questions that are important to you when choosing a college. You will find a list of sample questions below. You should also research the colleges that interest you ahead of time by viewing their website. You may impress a rep by saying, "On your website I noticed...," followed by a question.

If you are attending the National Christian College Fair you should dress to impress! Gentlemen should wear a polo or button down shirt with khaki or dress pants. Ladies, a blouse with slacks or a dress would be appropriate. Tuesday is picture day at Northside, so please dress nicely for both the pictures and the fair.
We have many other reps visiting our campus during the school day over the next couple months. Visiting reps will be listed in the Daily News and on the guidance blog (link in the Sneak Peek each Friday).

I look forward to hearing about your experiences at the fairs
