Calvin Coolidge Presidential Scholarship

The Coolidge Scholarship is an annually awarded, full-ride, presidential scholarship that covers a student’s tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study. The Coolidge may be used by recipients at any accredited college or university in the United States. Anyone of any background, pursuing any academic discipline of study, may apply to this non-partisan, need-blind, program.

Students apply for the Coolidge Scholarship during their junior year of high school. Finalists are flown in for a finalist weekend at the Coolidge Historic Site in Plymouth Notch, Vermont where they interview with the Coolidge Scholars Finalist Jury. Recipients of the Coolidge Scholarship are notified of their award late in their junior year, before college application (note: current high school seniors are not eligible to apply). Finalists who are not named Coolidge Scholars are eligible to receive a smaller, one-time, college scholarship.

Calvin Coolidge worked hard in academics; the young New Englander’s only sport was public speaking, often on public policy. The main criterion that distinguishes Coolidge Scholars therefore is academic excellence. Secondary criteria include: demonstrated interest in public policy; an appreciation for the values Coolidge championed; as well as humility and service.

The summer before their senior year of high school, newly-selected Coolidge Scholars spend several orientation days at the picturesque birthplace of the President, Plymouth Notch, Vt. There scholars get to know Coolidge and his world, and help the Coolidge Foundation oversee its formidable debate programs. Scholars return to Plymouth Notch for a week each summer while in college.

Although only a few students are named Coolidge Scholars each year, one hundred of the top Coolidge Scholarships applicants are named “Coolidge Senators.” Coolidge Senators are invited, all-expenses-paid, to participate in the Senators Summit that takes place each summer in Washington, D.C.  At the Summit, the Senators explore the nation’s capital, learn about President Coolidge, and meet other high achieving students from across the country.

The PB&J Scholarship is for students who have experienced personal challenges that may not have allowed them to perform well academically, but who still have the drive to succeed.

Examples of personal challenges include, but are not limited to:

• medical issues
• peer issues: bullying, change of school, minority status, etc.
• family issues: divorce, death, lack of income, homelessness, foster care, abuse, etc.

When in doubt, students are encouraged to apply; this scholarship is meant to be inclusive.

Queen City Virtual HBCU Showcase

Good morning, We would like to take the time to invite your sophomores, juniors, and seniors to our Queen City Virtual HBCU Showcase. Although our original intentions were to host this event in-person, COVID-19 has challenged us to transition to a virtual platform. Every Monday and Wednesday evening in October from 6pm-9pm EDT, we will have a Historically Black College/University registered in a time slot to give a presentation about their school. Students will have a chance to ask questions and receive additional information about each institution. We want to showcase the great programs that HBCUs have to offer our students. We are asking you to strongly encourage your students to register to attend our Virtual HBCU Showcase. As a current educator in Charlotte and a parent of four students, I am asking that you go beyond simply adding this to the website or sending it out in an email. • This student must plan to pursue a non-performing career in the performing arts (such as costume design, set design, education, stage management, etc.)

Michael A. DeMayo 2020 Scholarship Program

2020 Michael A. DeMayo Scholarship award program.

The annual Michael A. DeMayo Scholarship program is an exciting opportunity for local high school seniors to have a chance to win a $2,500 scholarship toward their college education.

The firm will be awarding a total of $37,500 in college scholarships to 15 high school seniors who reside and attend schools in counties served by the firm, including: Mecklenburg, Gaston, Catawba, Union (NC), Cabarrus, Cleveland, Lincoln, Rowan, Caldwell, Stanly, Iredell, Alexander, Burke, Robeson, Scotland, Richmond, Anson, Cumberland, York, Lancaster, Chester, Union (SC), Cherokee, Chesterfield, Marlboro and Dillon.

When the scholarship program initially began in 2003, the personal injury law firm awarded five $1,000 scholarships to Mecklenburg County seniors who wrote essays on how the community could help curb underage drinking and driving.

Over the past 18 years, the scholarship program at DeMayo Law Offices has grown. The program now includes 15 winners, across 26 counties, each who receive a $2,500 scholarship.

To qualify, students must have applied for full-time enrollment at a four-year university or college and must complete and return a scholarship application to DeMayo Law Offices, L.L.P. by the announced deadline. Scholarships will be awarded based on the student’s essay, PowerPoint presentation, or brochure, as well as their application, SAT scores, transcripts and letters of recommendation. Students are asked to submit their presentations and all related documents by mailing their completed applications to the address provided or in person at one of our local offices. Winners will be chosen by a selection committee.

The Assistance League^® of Charlotte Scholarship will be awarded to a 2020 Mecklenburg County high school graduate who exhibits outstanding community service and shall adhere to a policy of nondiscrimination on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, age, national origin (ancestry), disabilities, marital status, sexual orientation or military status.  The scholarship, not to exceed $12,000, will provide funding toward tuition, room and board, required fees and books for the freshman year at one of the 16 campuses of The University of North Carolina. Assistance League of Charlotte members and their relatives are not eligible.

The Assistance League^® of Charlotte CPCC Scholarship will be awarded to a 2020 Mecklenburg County high school graduate who exhibits outstanding community service and will adhere to a policy of nondiscrimination on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, age, national origin (ancestry), disabilities, marital status, sexual orientation or military status.  The scholarship, not to exceed $5,000, will provide funding toward tuition, required fees and books for the freshman year at CPCC. Assistance League of Charlotte members and their relatives are not eligible.

NACAC College Fair

Free College Fair - March 22, 2020

NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling) will host a free college fair in Charlotte. The fair will be from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. and will be held at The Park Expo and Conference Center.

Admission representatives from hundreds of colleges and universities will be available to speak one on one with your student about all aspects of the college admissions process, including paying for college, admission requirements, activities on campus, and more.
